Cinematheque

The Cinémathèque de Tanger (CDT) is dedicated to revitalizing the life of the cinema in Morocco. Our goal is to offer the people of Tangier the best of national and world cinema, through a bold and thoughtful series of programs which will defy the hegemony of commercial films in Morocco.

MISSION

The mission of the CDT:

  • To promote world cinema in Morocco.

  • To be a focal point of cinema culture in North Africa.

  • To provide screenings and resources to the public and act as a platform for dialogue and critical inquiry among cinema professionals.

  • To offer opportunities to meet some of the world's leading filmmakers.

  • To present an ongoing program of documentary films.

  • To create a documentary archive, as well as an archive of video art and experimental films.

  • To present a program of quality films for children.

  • To offer a screening room and editing suite for rental.

  • To distribute new films to other theaters in Morocco.

  • To teach and develop aspiring young filmmakers.

    PROGRAMMING

The programming of the Cinémathèque de Tanger brings together world cinema (in complete original versions) of all genres, from film noir, western, musicals, and silent films, to and contemporary new releases. The Cinémathèque is also about connecting Tangier to an international network of filmmakers and cinema professionals.

The Cinémathèque functions as a permanent film festival, with our festival partners providing us award-winning and 'official selection' films on completion of their respective festivals. Thus far our festivals have included the program from the Second Seville Bienniale of Contemporary Art, the Festival of Tetouan and more... Programming will also include new releases from some of the most highly regarded directors, brought to us via the worlds leading film festivals; retrospectives (e.g. : Elia Suleiman, Abbas Kiarostami, Atom Egoyan...); previews hosted by the filmmakers; a monthly series of short films; Sundays devoted to documentaries on the big screen; and a film club for young people.

To keep our doors open to the widest possible audience, we offer discounts and benefits for CDT members, and reduced ticket prices for children.

    THE COLLECTION

The Cinémathèque de Tanger is also committed to its documentary film collection and archive of video art and experimental film. The collection is growing mainly from private individuals and institutional donors such as distributors, producers, and film associations. This collection will become available to scholars, filmmakers and the general public as soon as the CdT has the funding for its digital archive.

THE CDT has a formal ongoing relationship with the Centre Cinématographique Marocain (member of the International Federation of Film Archives) to expand cinema culture in Moroccan film heritage. The CDT's "Cine Club" willscreen films loaned from the CCM's national collection.
