THE CITY OF TANGIER
Commanding a view of the southern Strait of Gibraltar, about fifteen kilometers south of Spain, Tangier is at the crossroads of three worlds - Europe, Africa and the Maghreb. The city has recently begun a new economic revival: a free trade area since 1991, Tangier encourages foreign investors to settle in northern Morocco. In the very near future it will host one of the largest ports in the Mediterranean that will make the city an essential economic and cultural platform for north-south and east- west relations.
The new film institute has both a physical and symbolic significance for the city. It is a dynamic social and urban structure that claims? a territory. Because of its strong urban dimension, our cultural facility is expected to play a leading role for Tangier, its neighbors and an international network of film centers.
In the space of thirty years, the number of cinemas in Tangier has more than halved (from 14 to 5 theaters). Today, programming is limited to Bollywood flicks and American action movies, with theaters rarely meeting modern technical and security standards. The continual closure of cinemas and theaters, and the the absence of a concert hall and museums have gradually left Tangier a city deserted by culture. But even if the offerings are poor, demand remains strong: the CdT is proud of its part in reconstructing Tangier’s cultural landscape.
