Cinémathèque de Tanger

The Cinémathèque de Tanger is building an ambitious film collection, focused on short films, film documentary, experimental films and artist videos, from North Africa and the Middle East. This archive of more than a thousand titles – which spans from the first color films shot in Morocco to the works of cutting edge contemporary artists – offers Tangerines, artists, researchers, and filmmakers access to an extraordinary film history.

Drawing on this collection we have guest-curated programs around the world, at museums, art centers, and other cinematheques, from Paris, London and Barcelona to Los Angeles and Istanbul.

The Cinémathèque de Tanger is dedicated to collecting original audiovisual material (magnetic, analog and digital), prints (négatif, internégatif, positif) and cinematographic patrimony (original posters, scripts, photographs…).

We wish to elaborate a conservatory for cinema : create a space of history and transmission of regional cinema as much as contributing to the national collection of film material.

We gather and save fiction, documentary, artist and amateur material about Tangier or realized by Tangerine authors, and more globally authors from Morocco and the Arab world. We also have a strong interest in foreign material shot in Morocco and the Arab world.

In that dynamic, it is fundamental to save recording, shooting, screening and film viewing material (U-matic, Beta, VHS…) in order to witness cinema history and be able to see and listen to material that preceded digital revolutions, which constitute a major risk to preservation due to obsolescence and time degradation.

We currently prepare the opening of a Resource Center in order to share our archives with the public, through a cinema and film library .

Cinémathèque de Tanger is equipped with DIAZ, a database specially designed for cinema collections and developed in partnership with several centers for film preservation. Thanks to this database we are able to index, document, and prepare the promotion of our collections.

Cinémathèque de Tanger has made significant working efforts in the digitalization of film and paper material to insure consultation and promotion of cinema memory towards audiences, moviemakers, researchers, academics, and students.
